Test engineers who kept finding calibration in spreadsheets
Makkal is a team of test and automation engineers in Galway, Ireland. We build the apps that quality, calibration and maintenance teams use every day, and we build them with those teams.
Where we come from
Makkal started on the factory floor, not in software. For more than twelve years our engineers have built test and measurement systems for manufacturers and R&D labs on National Instruments' platform (LabVIEW, TestStand, PXI and CompactDAQ): end-of-line testers, validation rigs, data acquisition and the automation around them. We are an NI partner, and that work took us inside production lines in automotive, electronics and medical devices.
Why we built GageMakkal
On those lines we kept seeing the same thing. Plants with modern equipment and software everywhere else still ran calibration from an Excel sheet: due dates in one column, certificates in a shared folder, and a scramble before every audit. In the age of SaaS and apps, the work that proves a plant measures correctly had been left behind.
So in 2023 we built GageMakkal, first as a side project for our own customers. It grew into an independent product. Since 2024 it has been in daily use at manufacturers in Ireland, including a Tier-1 automotive supplier and an electronics manufacturer, keeping their gauges and instruments calibrated, with the proof ready for auditors.
From one app to a family
Our customers kept asking for more: the machine that holds the gauge needs maintaining too, and a failed calibration is the start of a non-conformance. Those requests became MainteMakkal for maintenance, with internal audits, NC/CAPA and operations apps next. Each is sold on its own; together they share one sign-in, one list of people and one list of equipment.
How we work
- Engineers first: a team of developers builds the apps, alongside the people who use them on the floor.
- We answer every message ourselves, usually within a working day.
- Your data stays in the EU, in France. An enterprise customer can have its own installation in the region it chooses (see Trust & GDPR).
- We connect to what you already use: the first version of GageMakkal fetched calibration records and certificates straight from Testo's calibration portal (Primas Connect), and we build connections on request, from SAP to your own systems.
- AI where it saves real time, such as reading calibration certificates, always with a person checking the result.
